Backblaze published a very interesting blog post today about what hard drive you should by. Considering they use regular consumer drives like the ones the rest of us would buy it is a very interesting read. It is also a pretty LONG read, so if you just want to get to the point here are the drives Backblaze is currently buying.
If the price were right, we would be buying nothing but Hitachi drives…
our current favorite is the Seagate Desktop HDD.15 (ST4000DM000). We’ll have to keep an eye on them, though. Historically, Seagate drives have performed well at first, and then had higher failure rates later.
Our other favorite is the Western Digital 3TB Red (WD30EFRX)
Something to consider when you are buying new drives for your desktops.
If you are looking for new drives you can find all of these on Amazon.
I would encourage you to read the whole post on the Backblaze blog if you are at all interested in what drives your data is actually being stored on.
