Bitcasa Leaves Beta, Launches iOS App

Last month was the much hyped launch of MEGA from Kim Dotcom, this month Bitcasa leaves beta and announces pricing for their much anticipated Infinite drive. I doubt the Bitcasa launch will make as much noise on Twitter and on the Internet in general, but it should. Compared to MEGA Bitcasa kicks Kim Dotcom’s latest online storage services butt! In fact Bitcasa not only offers more than MEGA it could possible disrupt more services than just online storage services like MEGA.

Bitcasa is different than other online storage services by offering an Infinite drive. It does not sync data between your devices it moves your data to the cloud so you can access it on any device. Your local computer then becomes a cache for your data. Bitcasa does not stop there though, Bitcasa also offers a mirroring service. This is similar to what online backup services do it makes a copy of your data to their data centers so you can get it back in the event your computer hard drive dies.

bitcasa-iosBitcasa launched an Android app not long ago, and it now looks like their iOS app is also available in iTunes. It looks like the iOS app offers a similar feature set as the Android app. With the Bitcasa iOS App, you can:

  • Keep every file you’ve ever owned in your pocket.
  • “Favorite” items to keep a local copy always on your phone (so they are available offline).
  • Access your entire photo album, music , or video collection instantly.
  • Instantly share any document, video, or file with anyone.
  • Connect Bitcasa to your camera to automatically upload a copy of all pictures and videos you take.

Pricing for Bitcasa is one of the major announcements with them coming out of beta. It has been known for awhile that they planned on charging $10.00/month for Infinite storage but it was not known if they would have a yearly plan. The good news is they will have a yearly plan priced at $99.00/year, a 17% discount from paying monthly. The bigger news is if you subscribe this month you can get your first year for only $69.00/year. That is a 30% discount from the regular yearly subscription price.

Bitcasa is an interesting service that is a little different from other online storage and backup services. They offer a different model than other services that could be hard for some users to understand. The need to also have an always on Internet connection for the infinite drive could also pose a problem for some users.

If you use coupon code “BETATHANKS” (actually meant for Bitcasa beta testers) you can get it for 50% off i.e. 50$ for the first year.

I got the email but was unsure if I should post it, but after seeing it on the Bitcasa website I guess I might was well.
