CrashPlan Launches New Website

New CrashPlanCrashPlan has been working on a new website for a little while now and it has finally been made public. Not only has the CrashPlan website been redone, it now redirects to Code42.com. With Code42 also launching a service called SharePlan not long ago they appear to be consolidating the Code42 products and services under the Code42 brand name.

The new website is nice and uses the same style as the main Code42 website. Nice to see a focus on making the site responsive and more mobile / tablet ready.

The new branding has not yet been moved over the the CrashPlan application but I am sure that will come with a new release soon. CrashPlan might have a new look for the brand but a new look has not removed some of the issues with the service, mainly the dependence on Java.

There has been many promises from CrashPlan for a native Mac client that was suppose to be due out when Mac OS X Mavericks was ready. That date came and went and CrashPlan still have no native Mac application. No surprise that many Mac users are starting to feel duped by CrashPlan.

This was made worse by the fact that many Mac users of CrashPlan that upgraded to OS X Mavericks had to reinstall CrashPlan and Java to get the application running again.

While a native Mac application would certainly improve CrashPlan on the Mac, a native CrashPlan application is needed for Windows and Linux as well. The memory overhead of the CrashPlan service on my Windows and Linux installs was unacceptable. I had to finally remove CrashPlan from my Linux install to make the machine stable again. I was personally using CrashPlan as one of my cloud backup services but have since switched to Zoolz Home for an extra offsite solution using Amazon Glacier. I have been impressed so far and the price is half of CrashPlan.

Congratulations to CrashPlan on the new website, but hopefully we will see some improvement in their cloud backup application and service soon as well.

The old CrashPlan website and the new.

Update: Looks like the new website has broken all of the coupon links to CrashPlan. I will look into fixing it as soon as I can.

Crashplan have been promising a native Mac app for two years now, and yet still can’t give an ETA? They claim they’re an “all-Mac shop”, yet told me if I know of any Mac devs to let them know Crashplan is hiring. That’s great; so none of the people in your “all-Mac shop” can actually port from Java to Xcode in under two years; enough that you need to hire outside people? This instills confidence how?

Today was the last day I used Crashplan. I’m tired of it eating 800MB of RAM and half my processor power. I’m tired of having to run Java. I’m tired of the empty promises of a native client.

I don’t think you are alone. I dumped CrashPlan on my Windows and Linux machine because of the high memory use. There were other reasons as well but I think you are right CrashPlan and COde42 are facing a bit of a confidence problem with the Java app and their inability to get a native app out. Guess we will see what they do but they seem in no hurry to get anything done.
