Dropbox has been investigating the spam being sent to Dropbox users but has so far found no evidence of a security breach in their systems. The information was posted on the Dropbox forum yesterday.
We wanted to give everyone another update on our investigation into the reports of spam.
РAs of today, we’ve found no intrusions into our internal systems and no unauthorized activity in Dropbox accounts. РWe’ve reached out to users who’ve reported receiving spam messages and are closely investigating those reports. РSecurity is our top priority and we’ll let you know if we uncover evidence that these email addresses came from Dropbox.
Thanks for your patience. Investigations like this can take time and we’re working hard to get to the bottom of this.
Dropbox has not made an official blog post yet confirming or denying any kind of security breach. This communication on the Dropbox forum is the most we have heard from them.
The spam does appear to be mostly targeted at users in Europe since it is for online gambling. I did a search of my spam box for spam similar to what has been reported and I have several from Euro Dice. The email address I used for Dropbox is unique as well so obviously it is not just European users being hit by spam but others outside of the the US as well. Since online gambling is illegal in the US perhaps the spammers see no reason to target US based users.
If that is the case they not only have access to email addresses but also know what part of the world the are from. If Dropbox has sold this information they could have a rather large PR nightmare on their hands. If they do actually have a security breach and cannot find it they might have an even bigger problem. Who wants to trust a cloud storage company that cannot be trusted with your email address.
Have you received spam email to your Dropbox email address from Euro Dice? Will you continue to use Dropbox?
