Streem Opens Beta Program

Reading the press release and the post on Lifehacker for Streem today it was like d?©j?† vu. I was certain I had heard all about this service before but I couldn’t have. Streem is brand new and just opened their doors today in beta but read on and perhaps you will understand what I am talking about.

Streem is currently in private beta and you can sign up on the Streem website. You might have to wait awhile to get access but when you do you will get free unlimited storage for sharing your referral link during the beta period. After the beta period, you will receive an additional month of free unlimited storage, and then will have the option of staying on at $20/month.

They have client apps for Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android and offer a web portal to login and access your data anywhere. They stream files to you on demand, so you do not have to keep copies of your files on your computer or devices. They also use proprietary de-duplication and compression algorithms to offer unlimited storage. You can also share your files with friends and family easily.

The company is founded by former Twitter and Microsoft employees, Ritik Malhotra and Tanooj Luthra. Streem is also funded by notable investors, including Y Combinator.

Here are some of the screenshots they have available. I have not been granted access yet so I cannot test the service out for myself.

It all sounds to good to be true…it also sounds a lot like another company that offered many of the same features called Bitcasa. The only few differences so far are the price when they come out of beta and the encryption. Perhaps Streem will be able to succeed where Bitcasa has not, actually be able to keep their promises and not tick off all of their beta users. It will be interesting to try Streem, if and when, I get access but call me skeptical.

Bitcasa had $11 million funding. And THAT went wrong.. I don’t think anybody had a better chance at unlimited storage.

They have $1M accoring to their tweet. So few details about them will be interesting to see what happens. Will people go for unlimited at $20/month when Google Drive is $10/1TB?
