World Backup Day Contest & OnlineBackupDeals.com Site News

World Backup Day 2013Things have been busy here at OnlineBackupDeals.com since John announced he was leaving and I was going to take over. Since January I have been busy updating and adding several new reviews to the site. There are several more reviews to go to update since many of the services have released new versions and / or new features and the reviews are starting to get out of date. Here are a list of the reviews I have already added or updated recently:

2013-03-07 10.28.26There has also been some major and minor changes to the website. The major change is I moved the site from Media Temple. It was becoming more and more common that the site was down or if not down extremely slow to load. It was getting to the point I was seeing 9-10 second load times on some of the pages. The major problem always seemed to be a a long wait time from Media Temple. Once the initial wait time was complete the site would load fairly quickly. There was no excuse for such slow wait times for the initial request and it was clearly a problem on Media Temple’s side. The site uses MaxCDN, CloudFlare and W3 Total Cache and the majority of the data and requests can be served quickly, it was just the initial request that needed to be faster. Since moving the site to my LGR Internet Solutions dedicated server load times have gotten much better. The initial wait time is well under 1 second and in fact is in the milliseconds. Now you might say it is not a fair to compare the response time of a shared hosting account from Media Temple to a dedicated server, but this server is shared with my clients and some other of my personal websites it is just not overloaded like Media Temple.

There has also been several minor changes to the site, for example if you browse the site on your smartphone you will see a better main menu and there have been other small tweaks. There will be more tweaks to come and hopefully I don’t break anything to badly in the process.

I was also interviewed by SpiderOak for a new post on their blog talking about their affiliate program. As you know this site does take part in affiliate programs to help pay the bills. Not all services have affiliate programs and like John previously, I will not let the participation in an affiliate program influence whether I rate a service highly or not. If I did then services like Just Cloud would end up number one since they have a very high payout but the quality of a cloud service is not based on how well they pay an affiliate. It is great to be able to take part in the SpiderOak affiliate program and I am planning on redoing their review before the upcoming World Backup Day at the end of the month.

Speaking of World Backup Day it is coming up quickly at the end of the month. They are still working on the new website for 2013 and there has been little to no information coming out yet. Last year OnlineBackupDeals.com had two contests running in March, a World Backup Day contest and a try Backblaze iPad contest. This year for World Backup Day OnlineBackupDeals.com will once again be running a contest. I have 5 one year Backblaze gift codes still available so 5 lucky people will be able to win a free year unlimited online backup from Backblaze. The contest will start on March 15th and more details will be posted then. I can tell you now that one of the ways to enter will be to sign up for email updates. Everyone on the email update list will automatically be entered to win. Other ways to enter will be to tweet about the contest similar to last year. If you want to get an early start on the contest the email updates subscription form is on the sidebar. —>

For your information this contest is not sponsored by Backblaze, gift codes will be sent to the winners paid for by OnlineBackupDeals.com.
