CrashPlan Developing Native Mac OS X App

tmz-sportsillustratedswimsuitcoverThis might not be as big of scoop as TMZ scooping the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition’s cover of Kate Upton in a really tiny bikini in the middle of Antarctica but in the world of online backup hearing a rumor that CrashPlan is looking at creating a native Mac OS X client is perhaps as sexy as online backup can get.

Currently CrashPlan runs using Java, a great way to make it cross platform, but that can have its own set of other problems. One of those problems is Java can consume a lot of memory. I know on my test system that I have run CrashPlan on I have seen high memory use, and the occasional crash. Doing a Google search for CrashPlan Java Memory finds other people that have had issues with high ram use from Java and CrashPlan. There are even posts that suggest that to help CrashPlan and Java from eating lots of ram a solution is to regularly stop and start the program. Granted regularly stopping and starting CrashPlan will help with ram usage but it is really not ideal since the point of online backup is to stay out of the way and quietly keep our data safe.

The rumor that CrashPlan is working on a native Mac OS X comes from a Jochen Wolters who tweeted the following:

I asked him if you knew any more and he replied that he did not but did mention how he heard about this development.

I have tweeted CrashPlan for more information but have not heard back. If it is true that CrashPlan is working on a Mac OS X native app they might also be looking at creating Windows and Linux native applications as well. It would certainly improve the applications memory usage and allow it to run better on all the systems. Until CrashPlan makes any official announcement of developing a native OS X application we will have to wait patiently. While you wait (and if you are interesting in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition) you can see more photos of Kate Upton on her bikini shoot in Antartica. If that does not interest you there is always some funny cat photos you can check out.

Update
I found a tweet from CrashPlan saying that yes they are building native Windows and Mac clients but no word on when they will be available.
