Free Cloud Storage

Cloud storage is different than cloud backup but cloud storage has in many ways surpassed backup. More and more we are simply storing information in the cloud and accessing the information we need where ever we are. The incredible growth of mobile has accelerated this growth of cloud storage as we want access to our files on the go without having to copy them all to our mobile devices. If you just need some storage you can find any number of services that offer free space that can help you stay connected to your information anywhere.

Below are all of the free cloud storage services I could find along with how much free storage space they give you and if they have a referral plan to earn more free storage space. Depending on what your needs are will depend on what service you are interested in using. There are certainly lots of options.

Yunio (https://www.yunio.com) probably deserves to be placed in this list too, as it offers 1 TB of free storage space, with daily increase of 1GB! The ability to sync folders is the greatest feature here.

I have had several people mention them, and yes I suppose they do belong on this list. I don’t exactly recommend them to anyone though. To many unknowns. Their Terms of Service is in Mandarin, and for those people that speak Mandarin they can read it and comprehend it great, but for those of us that do not we have to rely on bad versions of Google translate. In other words you are agreeing to something that you do not understand and that is not a good thing.

From what I have seen of the terms of service via Google translate section 8 part 6 is concerning. I’ll paste the Google translate version and you can read it for yourself.

After reading that I have to wonder what they would do if you posted a picture from Tiananmen Square, like one of these from a Google Image search and started sharing it through the service. After all the government of China tends to like to control information more that some other governments.

Yes you are correct they probably belong here but I don’t know if I would recommend them to anyone.

Added Sync.com to the list. Offers 5GB free and is zero-knowledge. Could be worth looking into if you want some secure cloud storage.

There are several reasons why they are not listed actually. The first is they have no real contact information on their website, only a contact form. They also have a private WHOIS registration so you have no clue who they are and where your data is actually going.

The second, and it took me a while to find this, had to talk to John about it. The company is located in Hong Kong. I would be a little nervous about uploading my data to a China based online storage company. Not that I have any state secrets to worry about but don’t want to worry about it.

Third, they are playing off of the MegaUpload and now the MEGA brand name.

In short I don’t trust them. That does not mean I trust every site listed on the site, but there are a lot of other sites out there I do trust more than Megacloud.com
