If you have an Android based smartphone or tablet you might want to take a look at a new app from Genie 9 called G Cloud Backup. The app itself allows you to backup your Android device to the cloud, and unlike many other apps, backs up more than just your photos and video.
The complete list of items G Cloud Backup backs up includes:
- Call Logs
- SMS Messages
- Videos and Music
The free version includes 1GB of free space so if you have a lot of photos and music on your Android device you will not be backing them up on the free account. Larger accounts are available starting at 10GB for $0.99/month or an Unlimited storage account for $3.99/month.
I installed the app on my Galaxy Nexus and went through and backed it up using the app and it was very easy and fast to use. I have a lot of photos, video and music on my smartphone so I was not able to backup those items to the free 1GB account.
The best part of having an Android phone is having your contacts automatically sync with your Google account in the cloud. This is the one part of G Cloud Backup that overlaps with a built in part of Android. The app does give you the option to not backup your contacts but it could be handy to back that information up as well in the event your Google account is compromised or perhaps deactivated for some reason.
Web access to your backed up data is limited at the moment. You can login to the Genie 9 website but there is no way to view any of your data yet. It appears they are working on that and it will be available in the future.
Overall the Genie 9 G Cloud Backup is a great new app that you can use to backup your Android device. The free 1GB is a great start to let you backup your device. The option to purchase more room to backup your photos, videos and more is fairly inexpensive. Not being able to sync photos, videos and music to your desktop is unfortunate, but it does make apps like Dropbox, SugarSync, Mozy Stash and even the new Carbonite app a little ahead of this app. Unfortunately those other apps do not backup as much data as G Cloud Backup.
