Google Drive Gets A Big Price Drop!

Google Drive Blog New Pricing

Google Drive storage just got a huge price cut today from Google and it makes Google Drive one if the best deals for cloud storage. You can now get 100GB of storage for just $1.99/month. The pricing for 1TB of storage is only $9.99/month. The old prices were $4.99/month for 100GB and $49.99/month for 1TB. Existing users who already pay for additional storage will automatically move to a better plan at no additional cost. The storage is still shared between Google Drive, GMail and Google+ Photos.

This makes Dropbox and many of the other cloud storage services look expensive. Dropbox for example offers 100GB for $9.99/month. Bitcasa, who recently raised their prices, is probably the only one still close in pricing with 1TB costing $10.00/month. Unfortunately with Bitcasa one never knows what they might do next. The stability of Google as a company is certainly a selling point.

Personally I could very easily go for an extra 100GB of storage from Google. I use Google services everyday and the extra storage would be nice to be able to upload the rest of my photos for easy access and editing. Now if only Google Music would open up here in Canada. If you do get the extra storage make sure to backup your Google data as well. I recommend Spanning Backup. It is very easy to use and will keep your data safe in case your Google account is closed or hacked. They offer unlimited storage so all your new files in your larger storage will be backed up. Unfortunately they don’t backup Google+ Photos.

You can purchase more storage from Google on the pricing page. You will need to be logged into be able to purchase.

Wow, this is a huuuuge development. We’ll see if Dropbox, Box, SugarSync, or even OneDrive follow suit now.

I have a Windows Phone and run Windows 8, which Google has zero plans to support (beyond the desktop app), so I don’t see myself jumping at this.
