IDrive Android Review

IDrive Android App 1Google provides a basic way of backing up your Android device by keeping track of the apps you install, keeping your email and other data synced into the Google cloud and backing up your photos and videos to Google Photos. While Google does provide some basic protection for your mobile device data if you want more control over your data you might want to take a good look at IDrive for Android.

The IDrive Android app is so feature rich and complete you almost forget it is a mobile app and not the desktop version. You can use the apps to not only backup your photos and videos that you take with your mobile but also contacts, calendar, sms messages, call logs, music, apps and other files that might be on your device. It is a complete backup solution for your mobile device.

You can also use your own private encryption key so you data is not accessible to others while at the IDrive data center. You will need to make sure you don’t forget your private key but it will provide you with a higher level of security than many of the other cloud services available that offer backup of you mobile.

I have been using the IDrive Android app for close to two months now and I have to say I am impressed with the software and service. I signed up for the service to test the desktop backup and sync features here for the website and decided I would give the Android app a review as well.

Shortly after I signed up for IDrive and installed the mobile app on my Android phone I was faced with the unpleasant experience of having my Nexus 5 phone simply stop working. It would not turn on, it would not charge, it would not do anything. It was a brick. It was shortly after Google released an update to the Android OS and for some reason my phone went from working one day to being a brick the next. I took it into a local repair shop and they were able to reset the phone but of course I lost everything that was on it.

I was not concerned about the loss of data on my phone since I always keep photos and videos backed up with Google and now IDrive, but this gave me the opportunity to restore data from IDrive. Depending on what you need to restore it can be a simple process, in the event of music, photos and video or more complicated in the case of apps and sms messages. In the end I choose to restore mostly my music, photos and video since those where the items I could not easily re-install on my phone. In fact the screenshots of the IDrive Android app were some of the images I had to restore from the backup from IDrive.

I did download a couple of the apps to see how the restore would work but did not install them again since I already re-installed the apps from the Play Store. If you were working on an Android app or had apps that were not installed from the Play Store you would definitely want to look at the IDrive Android backup to keep those apps safe.

Overall I am very impressed with the IDrive Android app. It goes beyond just the ability to access your data from your cloud storage and is a complete backup solution for your Android device. The basic protection you get with Google is great but if you want to really protect your data I recommend you give the IDrive Android app and service a try.
