Backify To Stop Offering Free Accounts

In a move that is really not a surprise to anyone I am sure, Backify is already going to stop offering free 512GB accounts. It only took them 4 days since their launch to announce they are closing off new 512GB accounts. The good news is if you are one of the 50,000 users that already have a free account you will get to keep your free account. I don’t know if that is a good thing or not.

Since Backify is a Livedrive reseller, I highly suggest you look at the Livedrive review for more information. Perhaps I would have more interest in this company if they had actually developed their own backup service instead of reselling Livedrive.

This is good news for another Livedrive reseller called BeeCloud who according to their website still offers 512GB free accounts. Beecloud has also shutdown.

I will include the press release below for you to read and if you want to know more about Livedrive the service you would actually be using with Backify read our Livedrive review for more information.

50,000 Strong, Backify To Stop Offering Free Accounts—Accounts Already Created Will Remain Free

Backify.com, the cloud storage company that shook the IT industry last week by offering 512 GBs of free space for backups, has decided to stop offering free accounts soon. However the customers who have already singed up for free accounts will continue to enjoy the free service for at least one year, maybe more. The company has already signed up 50,000 free users in 4 days since its launch on Thursday last week.

A spokesman for the company said today that the response Backify got was tremendous and totally unexpected. Despite a few glitches in the website on the first day of launch, 50,000 users have already signed up for a free account and hundreds have upgraded to paid accounts. Commenting on some blogs which were trying to spread FUD about the company, he said, “Just wait and watch, they will eat their own words pretty soon.”

He further said that the company had originally decided to offer the free accounts all through out the first month after launch. But with the huge response, the company has to cut short the offer. “The free accounts will be available till the end of day Tuesday, so if you still haven’t signed up, go ahead and get an account before we stop offering them,” he said. After the offer ends, the 512 GB accounts will be available for $2.99 a month if paid monthly, or $1.49 a month if paid in advance for one year. This price is still very cheap as compared to other services.

Backify is a startup company based in Vancouver, British Columbia. It offers online backup and cloud storage services at exceptionally cheaper prices as compared with other companies in the industry.

Yep, the email from Livedrive warns too not give them your CC details:

“We are writing to inform you that BACKIFY.COM is no longer a Livedrive reseller and the services that they purchased from our company on your behalf have been terminated. If you are using a service provided by BACKIFY.COM and powered by Livedrive then this service will now have stopped working.

We would also like to advise you that we have received a number of complaints about BACKIFY.COM from their customers and from industry organizations. We would like to advise you not to provide any credit card information to BACKIFY.COM. If you have provided credit card information to BACKIFY.COM then we would suggest contacting your card provider and informing them that your card may be used fraudulently. If BACKIFY.COM have charged your card for services not provided you should contact your card provider and ask them to initiate a chargeback procedure.”

Unfortunately this is not completely true. All existing free users will lose their data on the 22nd November if they do not upgrade to a paid account.

As per their recent email: “We regret to inform you that we can not provide free backup services anymore. All free Backify accounts will be closed on November 22, 2011.”

It was a publicity stunt that went horribly wrong, offering 512GB free to lure customers in to only force their hand at upgrading a week later.

    Poor show Backify, poor show.

We regret to inform you that we can not provide free backup services anymore. All free Backify accounts will be closed on November 22, 2011.

In order to prevent your account from deletion, please login into your account and update your Billing Details.

Once again, we thank you for using Backify. Please update your billing details before November 22, 2011 to continue using the service.

I have/ Had a backify account and signed up the first day I had a year free account and Just received an email stated I must make a payment by 11-22-11 or be deleted from their service. I will choose to deal with a company that stands behind their own deals and Backify.com is not one of them
