There is no larger cloud storage drama than the story of MegaUpload and now the new launch of MEGA by Kim Dotcom. Certainly the drama around the closing of MegaUpload one year ago today by the US Government will be playing out in courts for years to come yet, but does Mega take cloud storage to a new level?
KimDotCom announced the opening of the new MEGA cloud storage on his Twitter account and no doubt it has been a busy day for the launch of the new website and cloud storage service.

The new Mega site offers free and pro plans and if the size of the plans and price are any indication you could get a decent amount of storage for good value. Free accounts are being offered 50GB of space, a generous amount of storage, and is certainly competitive with other cloud storage services. I singed up for a free account and no doubt the site is already having some growing pains since it was painfully slow to upload even a photo to the site.
Pro accounts packages start with 500GB of storage and 1TB bandwidth for $9.99 / month. The Pro tier II account is 2TB of storage and 4TB of bandwidth for $19.99 / month. The largest Pro account offers 4TB storage and 8TB bandwidth for $29.99 / month.
The service is all web based with uploads and file management all done through your web browser allowing you access to your cloud drive on your desktop and mobile devices. There is currently no apps available for iOs or Android but the help section of the website says they are coming. This means of course that you need to keep your web browser open to do your uploads and downloads. The service is certainly cloud storage and not any form of backup service.
It will be interesting to see how Mega grows and if it can avoid the long arm of the United States Government and the copyright police of the RIAA and MPAA.
