Robin – The “Cloud-First” Smartphone

Robin, a new Android phone from NextBit, has recently gone up for funding over at Kickstarter and is touted as “the world’s only cloud-first smartphone.” Launched just a few days ago, the original goal was to hit $500,000 within a month. With 28 days left the Kickstarter has already reached $709, 533.

NextBit explains that this means the phone will “intelligently adapt to your storage needs” by recognizing apps you use regularly and pushes the ones you use less frequently to the cloud. This way you have what you really need at hand but can access your other apps and files when you want them. Additionally, the phone will also automatically backup your apps and photos. The default is to automatically backup when the phone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi in order to conserve battery and data.¬†A series of display lights on the back of the phone alert you to whether you’re currently connected to the cloud or not.

On top of the cloud-related features, the phone also boasts some other great things. Since the phone will be sold direct to consumers with no middleman companies, there will be no bloatware added to the phone. The hardware itself is slim and minimalistic while remaining very unique. And importantly, the phone is designed and produced by people with lots of experience in the smartphone industry already – the three heads of NextBit have all done huge amounts of work on mobile phones whether product development or software engineering.
