Shared.com Cloud Storage Service Launched

Shared - Upload and Share Your FilesWhile I was off on vacation relaxing the team over at Share Media launched a new cloud storage service, appropriately named, Shared.com and they look to be serious about taking on some of the bigger players out there if size matters, and it does in cloud storage. They are offering 100GB free accounts taking on the new, but already growing MEGA, Copy.com and of course Dropbox.

Size does matter in terms of free cloud storage to help gain some market share in an increasingly crowded market. You can use the service to easily upload files and share them with friends. There is no desktop client to install, everything is done inside the browser, much like MEGA. Simply drag the file you want to upload to the web page and you can upload. I had no problem creating an account and uploading a file or two to test the upload.

Shared.com, as the name implies, is focused not only on uploading and storing your files in the cloud but on sharing those files with friends and family. Once files are uploaded they are easily shared with the links that are given to you. For example here is a screenshot of the Shared.com web page that I uploaded.

There are some limits to the free 100GB account, like a 2GB file size limit and no hot linking to files. If you need more space or less restrictions you can upgrade to a Pro or Pro Plus account. Pro accounts start at $9.95/month and come with 1TB of space while the Pro Plus account is $24.95/month and is unlimited in storage.

There does not yet appear to be any mobile apps with the service yet, but it does look like they are working on some mobile apps.

It will certainly be interesting to see if Shared.com can carve out some market in an already crowded marketplace that has seen a number of new services launch this year already. If you are needing some extra space to store files you might want to give Shared.com a try. Could always come in handy to send the latest pictures of your kids on holiday to family and friends.
