Update: SpiderOak scaled back the 50GB Free referral program to 10GB in March 2012. You can read about that in this post.
SpiderOak has been teasing on Facebook and Twitter that they had a big announcement coming. Well they finally let the world in on their secret and it is a great opportunity for people get an extra 50GB of free space. Many services, like Dropbox and SugarSync, offer referral programs where if you refer a friend to the service in return you get some extra bonus space. Dropbox limits referrals to an extra 10GB of space. SugarSync claims there is no referral space limit. Previously SpiderOak had a limit of 10GB for a maximum of 12GB of free space.
This new SpiderOak program is open to both free and paid users so even if you are only using the 2GB free version of SpiderOak you can refer people to get an extra 1GB per new user you refer plus the person you refer gets an extra 1GB of space. If you are currently using Dropbox you might want to look at switching to using SpiderOak. You can get more free space and not have to worry about SpiderOak employees seeing your files.
If you are already a SpiderOak user you can learn more about the referral program and start referring new users after creating your custom link here. You can read more about the program on the SpiderOak blog as well.
I am also a SpiderOak user and if you want to get an extra free 1GB on your signup feel free to use my referral code and we can both benefit. :)
This is a generous offer from SpiderOak. 50GB of storage for free is a decent amount of room. Remember that some companies like, Mozy, charge $5.99/month for that amount of space and Dropbox charges $9.99/month for a 50GB account.
