If you work with computers, you probably have a whole slew of bookmarks saved up. It would be pretty terrible to lose them all – I certainly know my work would take a huge hit if I lost all my resources and client-related links. Keeping your bookmarks backed up or synced in some way is a really great ensure you don’t lose your precious links. If you use Google Chrome, you have a couple of options.
Sync Chrome to Your Google Account
While in Google Chrome, click on the three horizontal bars in the upper right hand corner. A drop-down list with pop up – click on ‘Settings’. A new tab will open with all your Chrome setting displayed. Near the top should be a button labelled “Advanced Sync Settings”, which you’ll want to click on.
A small pop-up will appear with a variety of options you can select. These are the things you can choose to sync to your Google Account – saved passwords, searches, and of course your bookmarks. From this window you can also choose to encrypt all the data you sync with your account with a secure password.
This method is probably the best way to ensure your bookmarks are saved. By syncing, you make sure that anytime you log into Chrome on a computer you’ll have access to your bookmarks. This is especially handy if you use multiple devices.
Backup HTML File
If you’d rather have a separate backup to keep on your own drive or in the cloud storage of choice, you can also choose to export your bookmarks to an HTML file.¬†Just like before, go to the three horizontal lines in the upper right and then hover over ‘Bookmarks’. From there, select ‘Bookmark Manager’, which will open up a new tab displaying all your bookmarks. In the middle, you’ll see ‘Options’ with a black arrow next to it.
Clicking on ‘Options’ will then let you select ‘Export bookmarks to HTML file’. Then you can decide where to save the file and what to name it.
If you decide to switch to a different browser, you can then use this HTML file to import your bookmarks quickly and easily. If you use Chrome on a different computer with a different Google Account but still want the same bookmarks, this method can be handy too.
