Backing Up Bookmarks in Internet Explorer

Windows 10 is going to be shuttling in a new Microsoft experience for Windows users – and that includes those of you who use Internet Explorer. The future for the much-maligned browser is not entirely clear but Microsoft has revealed that they are working on a new browser for Windows 10. It’s best to back up your bookmarks now just in case your browser no longer works or your Favorites don’t get migrated for whatever reason.

Internet Explorer 5-8

If you’re using a version of Internet Explorer between 5 and 8, then you can follow these steps to get a backup of your bookmarks or “Favorites” as they are called in IE.

Click on the File menu and then select “Import and Export”. Click “Next” after that. You’ll then want to click “Export Favorites” and click “Next” again. From there you can select which folders of Favorites you want saved. This is good if you only really care about a few of your bookmarks, but if you want to back all of them up keep the “Favorites” folder highlighted and click “Next” again. All that’s left is to choose where to save the backed up Favorites. I definitely recommend saving it to the cloud storage of your choosing so that you can easily access it once Windows 10 hits without worrying about it being lost in the update.

Internet Explorer 9+

If you’re using a more recent version of IE then you can follow these steps to backup your Favorites:

Click the Favorites star icon in the upper right corner of your window. Then, click the down arrow to open the drop down menu. Within that menu select the “Import and Export” option and then “Export to a File”.

Make sure the “Favorites” box is checked and then pick which folders of Favorites you want backed up.

Once you’ve decided, hit “Next” and choose where to save the backup. Again, I highly advise saving the backup file to cloud storage! You never know what might go wrong so it’s better to be safe than sorry. When you’re done click “Export” and then “Finish.”

With Windows 10 starting to be rolled out in just a few days, it’s best to get your bookmarks backed up to the cloud before you update. And even if you aren’t going to be updating to Windows 10 – it’s just good practice to back up your settings every so often anyway!
