Backing Up Bookmarks in Mozilla Firefox

Continuing on in my bookmarks backup series, this week I’m covering how to create backups of your bookmarks in Firefox. Luckily it is a very straightforward process and Firefox does some of the work for you. It automatically makes backups of your bookmarks and you can restore from any of the past 10 backups it has created. Of course you can also manually backup your bookmarks if you so choose.

Using Firefox’s Automatic Backups

This is the easiest way to make sure your bookmarks are backed up because you really don’t have to do anything. Firefox makes backups everyday of your bookmarks and the only thing you have to do is select which day you want to restore to. So to do that, head to your Bookmarks button and click it. Then choose “Show All Bookmarks”, which will open up your bookmarks library window. Once that window is open, click “Import and Backup” along the top. Hover your mouse over where it says “Restore” and a drop down list will show up giving you the 10 most recent backups to choose from. Once you’ve selected one, your bookmarks will be restored!

Export to HTML File

If you’d rather have your own backup file to take with you to another computer or to use to switch to a different browser, exporting your bookmarks to an HTML file is nearly as the first option. Go back to your Bookmarks button and go to “Show All Bookmarks” again. Head to “Import and Backup” just like before, but this time select “Export Bookmarks to HTM” and choose where you want to save the file. And that’s it! You can then use that backup however you wish. This is definitely a good choice if you use multiple computers and don’t want to mess around with the Firefox profiles. Just save the file to your cloud storage and you can easily access your bookmarks whether you’re using Firefox on another computer or an entirely different browser.
