Announcing Hybir Backup

Just happened to come across a press release this morning for a new online backup service called Hybir. The press release came out on September 1 but it was still news to me so I thought many others had still not heard of this service. One of the complaints people often have about online backup is that it is slow to upload your first backup. The initial backup for Mozy and Carbonite can take a long time. Hybir hopes that change that by using “data deduplication” to not backup data that is already has. This speeds up the initial upload of common files, so you can backup your entire Windows installation and since the majority of the files in the Windows folder will be the same as other users your backup of that folder will be quick. This is different than some other services, like Backblaze, that does not even allow you to backup system files.

I took a few minutes and watched some of the videos they have posted on YouTube and the service looks interesting.

The service appears to be Windows only so far, and starts at $60.00 a year. They do offer a 7 day free trial without a credit card, so you can give the service a quick try without spending any money. The sign up form has a field for a promotion code, but so far I have not been able to find one. If I am able to find one or get one from them I will post it here for you to try. It would be nice if they offered a longer trial. SafeCopy Backup was offering a short trial but recently extending theirs to 30 days. Hopefully Hybir will do the same.

Overall the service looks interesting and will be one to watch as it starts to take on some of the leaders in the industry. Hopefully I can get a promotion code for you and we can all give it a try for longer or save on a subscription. You can read more at the Hybir website.

The complete press release is posted below.

Hybir Announces Hybir Backup – the First in a New Class of Full Online Backup Products

DENVER–(BUSINESS WIRE)–A new full online backup service was announced today by Hybir, Inc. a Denver, CO area company.

Hybir Backup performs data de-duplication at the client against the cloud while also supporting private key encryption. The patent pending Hybir technology eliminates the need to actually send most of the data to perform a backup.

“Hybir Backup offers unmatched performance and unique capabilities,” said Rasch Young, co-founder and CEO of Hybir. “We solved the upload bandwidth problem for the majority of the data on a typical PC. That allows us to offer unique features such as full online backup and the ability to quickly restore a PC back to a point in time. Hybir Backup can also perform what is called a bare metal restore. A bare metal restore is restoring a PC without an Operating System. All of this can be done over a typical internet connection.”

“The service is available for Microsoft Windows-based Personal Computers and requires a broadband internet connection,” Rasch said. “Most of the files on your PC are important or they wouldn‚Äôt be there. Other online backup services can‚Äôt help you get your PC working when it won‚Äôt boot or have other system problems. Hybir Backup can typically fix those issues in a couple of minutes.”

“Security and reliability are even more important than the performance and features set,” Rasch said. “That is why everything is encrypted using the highest level of SSL, and users can select their own private key and all of their data will be encrypted using the government approved AES 256 encryption algorithm. We also store everything at least twice on the backend. Most online backup providers store your backups once. It is expensive to store the backups more than once,” said Rasch, “but we think the added reliability is worth it.”

Hybir Backup is available now in three service levels starting at $60.00/year at http://www.hybir.com

The Hybir web site also provides detailed information about the service and has screen casts, otherwise known as movies, of the service in action.

Hybir is a Denver, CO area startup specializing in software and technology. Hybir Backup is their first product.
