Online Photo Backup

I do not think a week goes by that I do not get a call from someone wanting to know if I can help them recover their photos from their hard drive that just died. All to often there is not much that I can do and they are faced with either sending the hard drive away for data recovery or realizing that they have lost all of the photos of their kids and family memories.

Using an online backup service to backup your photos is perfect for the majority of people that have digital cameras. The most essential features I would look for are automatic backup or scheduling and versioning. If you like to share your photos with family and friends an online backup service that supports file sharing is a fantastic optional feature to look for.

Some people use online photo sharing sites as a backup for their photos. While these services, like Flickr, Picasa, Facebook and the many other sites that allow you to share photos are great for sharing your photos with family and friends I would not rely on them as your sole backup of all your photos. They lack the automatic backup features of an online backup service, and in many cases your account could be disabled or delete without a moments notice.

The cost of subscribing to an online backup service to keep your photos safe is nothing compared to the cost of losing them all. Online backup services are perfect for the backup of photos, and will make photographers of all levels rest easy knowing that their photos are securely and safely backed up.

What service do you use to backup your photos and why did you choose it?
