2014 is turning into the year of new websites for many cloud backup services. Carbonite continues to offer a solid service in 2014 becoming more competitive in the end of 2013 with the removal of their upload bandwidth throttle, and in 2014 they have relaunched with a new website, new plans names and most importantly new server backup solutions for businesses.
First the new website design is a refreshing change compared to the old design. Nice full screen photos and easy navigation to make it easy to find the plan that will work best for you. Some of the design reminds me of Windows 8 tiles that you can scroll through. While designs come and go this is a nice change for Carbonite who has had the same or similar website design for many years.
Website design changes aside Carbonite has also been doing some name changing on their plans. The personal plans changed from Home Plan, HomePlus and HomePremier to Personal Basic, Personal Plus and Personal Prime. No changes in features or price just cosmetic name changes.
The small business plans also changed and are now called Pro Basic, Pro Plus and Pro Prime. Compared to the prices that are listed on the Carbonite for Business page here it looks like there has been some price changes as well that I will have to update. Not sure if the price changes occurred before the name changes but the price for one year of Pro Basic used to be $229.99 and it has gone up to $269.99. The Pro Prime plan has stayed the same at $599.99 but the Pro Plus plan comes in the middle now at $499.99.
The biggest news from Carbonite so far in 2014 is the addition of a new backup service for businesses focused on servers. The addition of Server Basic, Server Plus and Server Pro Bundle focuses on backup for business application servers like Exchange, SQL and Oracle servers. The plans start at $799.99 but offer Windows server administrators another service to look at for safekeeping their applications.
I also noticed as I browsed around that Carbonite has renamed the Currents sync application to Sync & Share. Not all that surprising, but if you have a Carbonite account your should also check out the Sync & Share application. Can be useful to keep your files in sync across all your devices and on your mobiles and tablets.
