Best Non-Unlimited Online Backup 2012

Continuing the end of Backup Awareness Month today I look at the services that offer online backup but limit the storage size that you are allowed to use. While limiting the storage size can add some extra work for you to make sure you stay underneath your storage cap, many of the services are excellent and offer more features. If you do not need unlimited data storage you have several more choices for online backup. You will want to have a good idea of how much data you do have to backup and make sure the service you decide on offers a storage plan that will meet your needs.

Here are my top recommendations for non-unlimited online backup for 2012.

  1. SOS Online Backup
  2. IDrive
  3. SpiderOak
  4. SugarSync
  5. ElephantDrive
  6. Mozy
  7. Acronis
  8. Memopal
  9. SafeCopy
  10. Norton Online Backup

SOS Online Backup

You cannot ignore SOS Online Backup. They have been providing online backup since 2000, have 10 data centers spread out around the world, offer a Facebook backup application, mobile apps for Android and iOS and are a leader in online backup. It is SOS Online Backup that computer security companies, like Bitdefender, turn to to offer online backup.

IDrive

IDrive continues to impress and innovate in online backup and online storage. They have Android and iOS apps, recently released a new Linux online backup option, offer sync and will even help you backup your cloud documents from Google Docs. A very good service for backup.

SpiderOak

If you need a Windows, Mac and Linux online backup option along with sharing and sync SpiderOak is an excellent choice. Their focus on security puts them ahead of many of the other services. The added bonus of being able to install them on as many computers and you have is great to help keep your data in backed up no matter what computer you are using.

SugarSync

SugarSync is one of those services that once you start using it you are just amazed at how well it works. If you are a mobile smart phone or tablet user you will definitely be interesting in SugarSync.

ElephantDrive

ElephantDrive has improved considerably since I originally reviewed them. They now offer Windows and Mac and with features like sharing, syncing and support for Network Attached Storage and Network Drives makes them worth a look.

Mozy

Mozy has not been the same since they stopped offering unlimited storage. They have added new features like sync with Stash and mobile apps, and they continue to innovate but they have been slower. They do seem to be doing more in the business and enterprise side of their business and that is where they shine more lately.

Acronis

Acronis is one of those traditional backup software makers that has started offering online backup as well and it works. If they supported more than just Windows they would be great but their online service is good and honestly if you need a local backup solution as well look at their software it is excellent.

Memopal

You don’t hear a lot about Memopal here in North America, but they are a decent service. They do offer resellers so if you are looking for a North American reseller look at Safecopy. If you are in Europe you might have better speeds with Memopal simply because they are based out of Italy.

SafeCopy

A Memopal reseller and one of the few reseller I have reviewed. Offer the same features as Memopal but are based out of the US.

Norton Online Backup

If you already use Norton for your Windows security then adding Norton Online Backup is a pretty easy to do. It might not be as good as some of the other services out there but it is better than nothing.

While signing up for a service that has a limit on the amount of storage you can use is not as easy to use as many of the unlimited services, many of them are only limited in storage and offer better options for storing your backup. If you don’t need to backup tons of photos and video then these services are excellent options for your online backup needs.

If you would like a comparison grid of many of these online backup services you can do that easily on our companion website BackupComparison.com.
