Google Web Drive?

It has been rumoured for several years that Google might enter into the file storage and backup space. There is an interesting post over at Google Blogoscoped discussing the latest Google GDrive rumour based on two things.

It started because of the recently released Picasa for Mac and this screenshot:

Add to that a recent interview on CNET of Todd Jackson, Product Manager, who said:

We know people’s file sizes are getting bigger. They want to share their files, keep them in the cloud, and not worry about which computer they’re on. Google wants to be solving these problems

This would be an interesting time for Google to release a web drive product considering the recent closure of Dodgeball, Jaiku, Video, Mashup Editor, Notebook, and Catalog Search. If Google does release a Web Drive what will that mean for companies like file storage and sharing Box.net and HP Upline and of course the entire online backup market.

Perhaps Google will simply expand the storage space that is available to GMail and Google Docs users, since it is these users that tend to use the most space at the moment. If Google was to release a file storage solution it is likely that it would be able to be used to share files and documents between users.

We will all have to wait and see what happens in 2009 and if Google really does want to enter the file storage and online backup market.
