Portal by Pushbullet

Getting files on to mobile devices and tablets can sometimes be more difficult than it should be. Depending on your chosen mobile or tablet device you might have to connect the device to your computer or just download the content from the respective app store, but what if you want to copy over those latest files that you need for work or that album that you have not heard in a long time and you just want to listen to it on your next trip. If you already have the files copied into your cloud storage you can always access them and download them but if they are not in your favorite cloud storage service Pushbullet has a new quick and easy solution for you called Portal.

Portal is a combination of an Android app and the website. Simply go to Google Play store and install the Portal app on your Android device and visit the Portal website. Once the app is installed on your Android device simply start by scanning the QR code on the Portal website your desktop and Android device will be connected and you can drag and drop files and folders from your desktop and they will be transferred to your phone or tablet.

For those that don’t like uploading your files to the cloud you don’t need to worry. Portal transfers files over your wifi connection and nothing is uploaded to Pushbullet. When you are done transferring files just tap done on the app or disconnect on the web browser and you are done.

I gave the app a try and I was pretty impressed. I easily had no problems transferring files from my desktop to my phone. I transferred an album by the Arrogant Worms over to my phone and Portal transferred the files and put them in the phones music folder. It worked perfectly, except Play Music would not find the files, but after a quick restart the album was there.

Check out the video Pushbullet has of the app and how to use it.

Overall Pushbullet has created a very easy to use app and website to solve the problem of getting files to your Android device. Hopefully it will be available on iOS as well then my days of connecting my daughters iPod to the computer and using iTunes will be over. I can only hope.

Update: Portal by Pushbullet has also been released for iOS.
