SpiderOak Promotional Codes

I just happened to see these two SpiderOak promotional codes when I was doing a search for them on Google. The codes both appear to be good for February 2009 only. I will highlight the codes in the original press releases below. The first has SpiderOak taking advantage of the recent goof up by Carbonite planting fake reviews in Amazon. The second is a promotional code for February.

In case you find them hard to see in the actual press releases the first promotional code is ethics and the second is lovestorage.

SpiderOak Competitor’s Bad Ethics Mean Good Deal for SpiderOak Customers

Company Offers 20% Discount To Customers In Light Of Competitor Caught Creating Fraudulent Reviews

CHICAGO, Jan. 29 /PRNewswire/ — Online data manager SpiderOak today announced the company is showing its frustration at the unethical behavior of an industry competitor, by offering customers a very good deal on its storage services. The 20% discount will be available to those customers signing up for yearly contracts during February, when they enter the promotion code “ethics” when prompted during the setup process.

“We think our customers and potential customers deserve the best, and we are very disappointed that a company representing our industry would behave in such a dishonest way,” said SpiderOak CEO Ethan R. Oberman. “To make up for the unethical behavior, we thought we’d extend this generous offer to our customers, to remind them that there are reputable, honest companies in our industry that are truly committed to earning ‘kudos’ the old-fashioned way – by providing a great product and reliable customer service.”

The incident referred to by Oberman involves an online backup company that was revealed to be providing stellar reviews for its own product on Amazon.com, a practice commonly referred to as “astroturfing.” The reviews were, in truth, created by the company’s Vice President of Marketing and a Senior Software Engineer, although they did not identify themselves as such in the reviews. The fraudulent reviews were discovered by a customer of the company who had personally experienced significant product and customer service difficulties which were in direct contrast to the reviews.

Standard SpiderOak pricing is free for the first 2GB of storage, $10/month from 1 to 100GB, and $10/month for each additional 100GB increment for an unlimited number of devices.

SpiderOak is the only online storage provider that enables users to store, backup, access and share files from any combination of Windows, Mac and Linux computers as well as external storage media in a single account. All data is stored in a central storage repository – called a ‘SuperCloud’ – and accessible from any device in the user’s virtual personal network. Sync services will be added soon.

SpiderOak’s advanced de-duping cuts backup/sync time by as much as 90%, as well as reducing storage costs by conserving space. Other features unique to SpiderOak include perpetual file and version storage even for older and deleted files, the ability to aggregate multiple devices in one account to take advantage of bulk storage rates, and an industry-first no-password-storage security policy that prevents even SpiderOak employees from viewing user information including file and folder names. Multiple redundancy strategies and an automated stress testing and verification system protect customers against data loss.

I think I said what company it was that was planting reviews in Amazon. If you missed it, it was Carbonite. The NY Times covered it: http://pogue.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/01/27/carbonite-stacks-the-deck-on-amazon/
