12 Free Online Backup Services

In these tough economic times it can be difficult to spare a few dollars to backup your most important files online. Making regular backups to CD/DVD can keep the majority of your files safe. For your newest files or for your most important files you can use one of the several online backup services that offer free space. You won’t be able to backup your entire photo, video and music collection but your latest term papers, reports and important files should fit and allow you to keep them safe.

Of the companies I have already reviewed here are the ones that offer free backup space.

Company Size Operating System
IDrive 2gb Free Windows & Mac
Mozy 2gb Free Windows & Mac
MyOtherDrive 2gb Windows, Mac & Linux
SpiderOak 2gb Windows, Mac & Linux
SugarSync 2gb Windows, Mac, Windows Mobile, Blackberry & iPhone

Both services offer excellent free versions. IDrive might be a little ahead with the release of IDrive Portable which will manage a local backup and your free online backup as well.

A quick overview of all the services I have listed I found the following companies offering free space for people to backup. I have not had a chance to test each of these services yet so how reliable they are and easy to use I do not know. Feel free to test them out and let me know what you think of them.

Company Size Operating System
ADrive 50 gb Windows, Mac & Linux
Cucku Depends on partner Windows
CrashPlan Depends on partner Windows, Mac & Linux
humyo.com 10gb Windows. Mac and Linux coming soon.
Orbitfiles.com 6gb Windows
steekr 1gb Windows & Mac
Syncplicity 2gb Windows. Mac coming soon.
VMN Storage 1gb Windows. Mac and Linux through FTP

Did I miss any? What services suck? What service is your favourite? Let us all know by leaving a comment.

Update: SugarSync added to June 17 making the count 13.

Are you referring to Windows SkyDrive? It is a decent online storage solution but it is not really a backup solution. It lacks certain features like automatic backup. It is more in the same class as Box.net or Dropbox than online backup.
