Dropbox Alternatives

There is no doubt that Dropbox is a leader in online storage and files sync between computers. What makes Dropbox so good is that it is simple. Install the application on the computers you want to sync files between, login and it just works. As good as Dropbox is there are some excellent altenatives available that offer more than just online storage and file syncing.

SugarSync – SugarSync is an an excellent Dropbox alternative, if it had Linux support it would be ahead of Dropbox. Offering 5GB for free and more paid package choices that make it easier to grow. Not to mention publishing straight to Facebook, streaming of music to your devices and syncing to mobile devices. SugarSync is an excellent Dropbox alternative.

SpiderOak – You can get a free SpiderOak account with 2gb or go paid and start at 100gb for $10.00/month. Not only can SpiderOak sync your files between multiple computers and operating systems it is also a rock solid online backup service with a zero knowledge policy that ensures your data is secure.

Opendrive – If you do not need to worry about support for Linux Opendrive is a good alternative to Dropbox. Functionally it is similar, although it is easier to add your data to Opendrive from anywhere on your computer than Dropbox. Opendrive has a more robust web experience offering online editing of documents and streaming of music and video.

MiMedia – MiMedia does not actually sync your files between computers, but the MiMedia drive does make all the files you upload available to all the other computers you have MiMedia installed on. This works as long as your computers are connected to the Internet and could be great to have access to the same files between home and work.

What other Dropbox alternatives do you know of? What is your favourite?

Edit: Sept, 8, 2011. Thought I would add a table of the main Dropbox alternatives. Added in MyPCBackup as well since they offer a sync feature.

I think http://filecamp.com/ is great, mainly because it is made for designers and it is easy to collaborate and share with customers.

I absolutely love OpenDrive.com! I’ve been using it internally as well as with clients at my office. We often work with large files (printing files, ai, eps) It has been such a blessing to be able to allow clients to upload files directly to our OpenDrive account.

I tried dropbox, but was annoyed that I had to have the other person sign up for an account just to share documents. MiMedia was just way out of our budget, and spideroak was painfully slow.

I love the service I’ve received from OpenDrive and would whole heartedly recommend it to anyone.
