Browsing through my feed reader today I came across this great post on TechCrunch about Google GDrive. Google GDrive seemed to be close to appearing back in 2008/2009 when OnlineBackupDeals.com started and then it mysterously dissappeared.
Things have changed considerably since then though for Google. Google Chrome was launched in 2008 and has gained browser market share. Android has exploded and people are expecting their documents to be available everywhere in the cloud. Google has also launched the Chrome OS. Not to mention external changes such as Dropbox being valued at 4 billion and Apple about to release iCloud.
Now seems to be the right time for Google to release Google GDrive and it sounds like it will be a direct competitor to services like Dropbox and possibly other online backup services that offer syncing like SugarSync and SpiderOak.
In some ways I am surprised Google GDrive is not more like the recently announced Bitcasa. That total shift that Bitcasa is trying would appear to be right up Googles alley. Perhaps we will see more of a move to the cloud as your hard drive afterward. Until then I look forward to seeing the new Google GDrive and testing it out.
