iCloud Inc. Launches iCloudDrive For Business

I hestitated to post this news release, but after reading it I think it will provide some humor for the rest of the week. When you hear the word “iCloud” what company do you think of? If you said Apple you would be in the large majority of what people would say. But there is apparently another company called iCloud Inc. that now sells online backup. Do you think that will cause confusion in the marketplace? From what I can tell they appear to be another Livedrive reseller but I can’t confirm that and I am not willing to give them any of my money to find out.

Besides the fact that they seem to want to be confused with Apple’s iCloud, which will probably get them a cease and desist letter shortly, I found a couple other interesting things in their whois data alone. Their press release states they have been in business since 2000, but the whois data says the domain was created June 13, 2011. The announcement by Apple about iCloud happened on June 6, 2011. A little to much of a coincidence. The domain name was also bought using a proxy to keep the ownership data private, while that is not unheard of it is surprising since they have a contact information on the website. Granted when a business starts and when the domain name is registered do not always happen at the same time.

I will include the press release below for you to read it. If anyone has more information about this company leave a comment.

I just noticed this article and I beg to differ with your findings. We had done our due diligence and found out that iCloud Inc. is a registered company over a decade ago. The trademark has been filed as well as Apple’s and if I were you I would review a lot more before writing things that made it look out to be a joke because the joke might be on you for the lack of doing proper due diligence. iCloud Inc., the iCloudDrive product, if you do the math, you would realize by far in comparison that they are a lot more competitive in pricing and have a lot more to offer the end user than all of your online backup services today. We have used iCloudDrive product and found it to be seamless and are very happy with the service from iCloud Inc. Congratulations iCloud Inc., continue the great job!

You are very welcome to dispute my findings. Feel free to leave some links to your evidence I am sure we would enjoy reading it.

As for when the company registered, it could have been a decade ago but their domain name whois information certainly appears to be new and I believe I stated that in the post.

As for the trademark, I am not a trademark lawyer, never claimed to be, but I bet you ask the average person on the street what company they think of when they hear the term iCloud and I would bet 99.5% of the time it is not iCloud Inc. The little information I did find on the trademark can be seen here: http://trademark.markify.com/trademarks/uspto/icloud/85362239 and the first use of the word iCloud by them was June 2000 so they could have a case if Apple comes calling. While they might have first use it was not filed until July 1, 2011 one month after Apple’s trademark was filed (http://trademark.markify.com/trademarks/uspto/icloud/85335801) Sorting that kind of stuff out is what the trademarks lawyers are for.

Glad you are happy with their iCloudDrive service but am quite sure that they are a Livedrive reseller. It is not hard to notice the similarities between the service offered by Livedrive and iCloudDrive. Perhaps a couple of screen shots of the two side by side will be useful.

      Their home service page.

And their terms of service page.

If the websites are that similar you can be pretty sure the desktop client is Livedrive.

Their other services that they offer might be very good, but Livedrive and Livedrive resellers have been having a rough time of it lately and I think there a quite a few people out there that would be a little more than leery to use them for storing their data. It is important to know who is actually storing your data after all.

As for the math, the price of their service is comparable to many other services including our top picks of Backblaze, Crashplan and Carbonite. Price is not always the most important point though for most people.

John Tucker : If you goto the link you provided : http://trademark.markify.com/trademarks/uspto/icloud/85362239

You will note the folling interesting things :

        1. The address listed of the company is completely wrong ! ….No such street or town exists in ND !

        2. The name of the street (in the address listed) is : ROLETTE ST
Which the owner has composed from his own name ! Raj Oulette : a well know fraud.

Seems to me the only thing they will get from the press release is a call from Apple.

I had to remove the link from your comment. It was causing some problems that I will have to look into. I did a similar search and turned up very little.
