SpiderOak Announces 5GB Free Storage Promotion for World Backup Day

SpiderOak has been pretty quiet this year about World Backup Day, after being one of the major sponsors of the day last year. Of course last year World Backup Day was more of a reddit reader movement and this year World Backup Day is more of a commercial enterprise. Guess that is why there has been no mention of Dropbox this year, they simply do not need the advertising, but I digress.

It is nice to see SpiderOak announcing that they are continuing their 5GB free space. It certainly gives people a decent amount of space to try SpiderOak and gets them half way to the maximum of the 10GB that they now offer.

The complete news release is included below for your information.

SpiderOak Announces 5GB Free Storage Promotion for World Backup Day

2nd Annual Internet Event Encourages Consumers and Businesses to Proactively Back Up Their Most Important Data

SAN FRANCISCO, CA–(Marketwire – Mar 29, 2012) -¬†SpiderOak, the zero-knowledge cloud backup, sync and sharing environment that is 100 percent private, today announced a promotion in celebration of World Backup Day, which takes place on March 31. As part of a global movement to encourage consumers and businesses to proactively back up their data — SpiderOak is offering 5GB of free storage — for life.

“Backup is evolving,” said Ethan Oberman, CEO of SpiderOak. “More and more people are discovering how maneuverable, flexible and scalable the cloud can be for both consumers and enterprises. The cloud is increasingly becoming synonymous with backup, even more so than traditional hard drives. Yet most cloud providers don’t offer a level of privacy that you can be comfortable with — their employees can see your data, and that’s like leaving your hard drive on your front porch for anyone to view. At SpiderOak, we want to show our support for World Backup Day by sharing our completely private backup, sync and sharing environment with users for free. Users can back up their data into the cloud with true peace of mind, knowing that nobody else can see it, under any conditions.”

World Backup Day, now in its second year, is an annual Internet-wide promotion of data backups. More than 1.8 zettabytes of data, enough to fill 57 billion iPads is now stored and replicated around the globe [1]. With hard drives failing at an annual rate of three percent, and failures increasing with age, World Backup Day is spreading the message that proactively backing up important documents, from baby photos to real estate contracts, will save users the stress and heartache of seeing their data suddenly and permanently disappear inside a failed hard drive or device.

SpiderOak recognizes that we live in an era of both internal and external threats to privacy. To address the need for 100 percent privacy, SpiderOak’s cloud backup, sync and sharing environment uses a holistic approach to data storage. Data is encrypted locally and during transfer and storage. In addition, SpiderOak never stores the plaintext version of a user’s encryption keys or password. Even SpiderOak employees cannot view any user content. The result, termed the Zero-Knowledge Privacy Standard, represents a breakthrough in data privacy and protection.
