SpiderOak Scales Back Refer a Friend Program

SpiderOak had one of the most generous referral programs there was, offering up to 50GB of free space. Recently on the SpiderOak blog however they have announced that the SpiderOak referral program has been scaled back to only 10GB.

They give three reasons on the blog:

  1. People abusing the program and creating a massive number of dummy accounts.
  2. Storage prices have increased due to floods in Thailand.
  3. A Black market selling of lifetime SpiderOak 50 GB storage accounts.

Effective March 8, 2012 the SpiderOak refer a friend program has a limit of 10GB, which is the same as the Dropbox referral program, although it is possible to get more space with Dropbox occasionally.

There are still other file storage and sync services that offer generous refer a friend programs like SugarSync and Mozy, both of which do not currently have a limit.

Too bad to hear about the SpiderOak changes, it was one of the best refer a friend programs available.

Seems to me like this move will only INCREASE blackmarket sales of grandfathered-in 50GB free accounts.

It could I suppose but it would not be able to go above $50 a year. Why would you buy a free account if you can buy a full 100GB for $100/year. There is a limit on the price of it.
