Use Dropbox to Extend Your Backup Service

It has been a while since I added any new backup tips here at OnlineBackupDeals.com so I thought I would let people in on a tip that I use everyday to help make sure my files are backed up and safe. The beautiful part about this tip is it works with every online backup service I have tried, although it is not really needed with the services that already provide multiple computer backup and sync, like SpiderOak and SugarSync to name a couple. If you use Mozy, Carbonite, Backblaze or IDrive to name a few then this tip is great and does not really cost anything extra. The tip is simple really, get a Dropbox account and use it to sync your files between your extra computers and your main computer that has your online backup service and make sure your main computer that backs up your data includes the Dropbox folder in its regular backup.

The one thing that Dropbox does very well is sync data between computers. By adding Dropbox to your main computer that you backup with your favorite backup service you can easily include the Dropbox folder to be included in that regular backup. By siumply installing Dropbox on your laptop or netbook you can sync files betweent he two computers easily. This makes it easy to transfer files, photos etc while you are away from your main desktop. Just copy them into the Dropbox folder on your laptop or netbook and they will sync online with Dropbox and with your main desktop.

The main drawback to this is the limited space of 2gb that you get from Dropbox for a free account. You can refer others to Dropbox and earn up to 10gb for free. Any more space than that and you will have to pay for a larger account. For many people a 2gb account is plenty to take advantage of the advantage of the automatic sync between computers.

If you don’t have a Dropbox account I encourage you to take a look at their service. While it is not a backup service in the strictest sense it offers some great features that can add value to your existing backup service. I know I use it regularly to sync data between computers and to have data between machines backed up by my online backup service.
