Backblaze 2.5 – The Tranquility Release

blog-tranquility
It has been a busy February for Backblaze, first announcing their new data center and now announcing a new version of the Backblaze software. The new version of the Backblaze software is not all on the desktop client though. Much of it has to do with enhancements to the online account.

First up is the new account page that gives you easy access to changing a number of things about your Backblaze account like you password, how often they email you and finally an easier way to change your billing plan. Add to this an overview page where you can see all of the computers that are backing up under your account and external drives and when they last connected.

Backblaze has also finally added email notifications to their accounts. You can set notifications to be sent weekly or monthly and they can let you know if you computer has not backed up for awhile and if an external hard drive has not been connected in awhile. In Backblaze case this is important becuase external drives that are not connected will have their data removed from the backup after 30 days. It would be nice to see this changed at some point in the future still but at least you will get a notice now.

One of the changes way down in their blog post, and a setting that I always recommended that people change, is the file size limit that Backblaze had built in. The desktop client defaulted to only backing up files up to 4GB in size. They offered unlimited file size but it was not the default. Thankfully this has now changed. The default is now unlimited file size and if you want you can set it to a smaller size. Why on earth you would change that I don’t know. I am sure in future releases this will eventually just be dropped, but for now you can rest easy knowing that Backblaze will backup all your files regardless of size.

Now if they would do something about an Android client and that silly restriction of 30MB for downloading files in the iOS app things would be even better.
