Google Drive Near Launch!?

Seems to be a lot of talk on the Internet today about Google Drive (GDrive) being close to launch. Apparently it started with a story over at the Wall Street Journal (Ya I could not read it all, stupid paywall. Just for that you get a nofollow.) and has been spreading out. There was a story at Extreme Tech and even Search Engine Journal. They all pretty much say the same thing, that Google Drive is close to launch.

Of course we have all heard this story before. Back in September there was a screenshot of what Google Drive might look like out.

Then in October there was information that there was something at a Google URL. Now if you check http://drive.google.com you get a 404 error. Granted it is interesting if you do a Google search for drive.google.com the URL shows in the results but it appears to just be the Google Docs home page. Clicking through is a redirect that never loads.

There is speculation about what the cost might be, and we have talked about that before in an older post “Dropbox vs. GDrive“. With Google storage prices so low they will certainly be a competitor with Dropbox and other sync services like SugarSync and SpiderOak. Although with the launch of free InSync not long ago Google storage is already a competitor in the storage space in many ways.

Will Google Drive actually be launched this time or is it just another rumour? Will you switch to Google Drive if it actually launches?
