Full Memopal Review

memopal-homepage Memopal is an online backup and online storage software system that takes the guesswork out of backing up your system. All you have to do is install the software and it will backup your system automatically. The Italian group of software engineers began developing this application in December of 2007 and released it in April of 2008.

Memopal is the new kid on the block so to speak but is growing quickly offering several other languages besides English including Chinese, French, Finnish, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish. Along with these languages, they are planning to add another 24 languages, which will put it as the leader in the industry offering multi-language services for backup services.

After you download, install, and configure the application, Memopal will back up your files automatically to a remote server through a secure Internet connection. The secure offers 128-bit encryption during the transfer and 448 blow fish encryption while in storage.

Memopal offers ~~150~~ 200 GB of space for $49 per year, ~~250~~ 300 GB for $99 per year, but does not offer unlimited space. If you wish to try out the service before committing to an entire year, ~~Memopal offers a trial version that will allow you upload 1 GB of data for seven days. You will have 90 days to recover your data after the trial version if you decide no to continue with the service.~~ Memopal has started offering a 3GB free version that you can use to try out the service or for small backups.

The innovative RAID 5 technology has been added into the service, which will create three copies of your data to be maintained across different servers in three different locations in three different continents to ensure you data are never lost due to any type of natural disaster.

I have backed up 30Gb – Memopal tell me I’m over my 200Gb limit. I download all mby back and – yes – I only have 30Gb backed up.

But Memopal can’t count! I have empty directories and Memopal says I have 2Gb in them.

This has been going on since 15 Dec.

It was a good thought, John, and an option. It just wouldn’t be my first choice. I also didn’t find settings that allowed met to set backup times, although I might have missed that. I am used to backing up nightly with external hard drives and that’s just fine — I wanted something off site. As far as I could tell, Memopal only backs up continuously, which I discovered is not necessary an advantage.

Yes, John, I could do that — but I don’t think I should have to. So, that combined with the other issues means that I’m taking the offer for a refund and looking elsewhere.

  I agree you should not have to do that, but I know sometimes people just need to work. Some clients I help we turn off their backup service during the day just to free resources and then have the computer turn the backup service on at night when the Internet connection is not being used and nothing else needs the RAM. It was a thought.

Memopal has emailed me saying that they are aware that there’s a bug with “some versions of Excel” (I use 2007) and the only work-around is to suspend the program. Since I use Excel often, this is not going to work for me. (Yes, I think it is a file-lock issue; it creates another file on my hard drive that it insists I save with another name.)

As annoying for me is the amount of memory Memopal uses as it attempts to capture changes in files and save those as soon as possible; I long ago developed a habit of hitting “control S” often, just in case, which means it is saving dozens of versions of the same file.

Support has been very good about the Excel issue; they have offered to close my account and send me a refund.

  Good to hear support has been good about it. Don’t know if this will help, but perhaps you can just run Memopal when you are not working and let it backup when you are done for the day. Just a thought. It does not solve the problem but might make Excel usable.

Memopal support just said on multiple occasions “we can download the large filess with no problem”. Yes, probably from Italy :) US access may make the difference. I am speaking of issues with 800MB-1GB files restore.
I was about to sign-up with iDrive (really like them – superfast backup and restore in my tests), but then I found about crashplan. VERY reasonable prices, and service looks solid. I am test driving them too now – in a restore test right now …
I will probably choose between both – or may choose both? Need to decide before end of month …

  I have tested Crashplan but not recently. I should give them another try and write a review. It was very flaky and used a ton of RAM when I tested it out. Seemed to be related to my Java install. Perhaps it has gotten better.

    Crashplan worked well so far – seems not as speedy as iDrive, but not bad, both on backup + restore, even of large ~1GB files.
    It also took significantly more memory, as you mentioned, but not something which is completely out of line (~50MB; out of 3-4GB on all of my systems, this is OK; iDrive for example take ~7MB, which is very nice).
    Any other inputs re Crashplan and iDrive?

      50mb of RAM is not bad. I recall it using a HUGE amount of RAM, in the 500mb range at one point and bringing the system to a crawl.

I am using Memopal for a year now, and it has 3 significant drawbacks –
1) backup takes forever, VERY slow
2) restore of large files is very challenging; if you cannot restore smal AND large files – what’s the point of a backup service?
3) the way memopal is calculating account size is considering ALL versions of a file, which does not make sense … I do not need all versions of a file, and there is no way to delete older versions, or setup # of versions to be stored (I do not need more than 1 or 2 in most cases). This means that I may have 50GB to backup, but on Memopal is actually considering 300GB+ because of all the versions.

Eventually #2 (you cannot reliably restore large files) and #3 led me to search for another backup service. Looking seriously at iDrive, but not sure yet.

BTW – a gret PRO for Memopal which is not usually mentioned is their support for webdav access.

  This is common to many online backup services. I believe it has been commented on here before about Memopal being particularly slow. Not sure why that is the case. For some people though it is becuase they expect their upload speed to be as fast as their download speed, which is not usually the case. Just a reality of most ISP’s.Agreed, restoring large files should not be an issue. Did Memopal support have any ideas why this is a problem? I do not recall Memopal having a limit on the file size. I know there are some services that limit or warn about files of 4gb.That just sounds wrong. Their is no other provider that I know of that calculating size that way, but I will have to look and see. I will see if I can get a comment from Memopal regarding this.

DISAPPOINTING. Excel files (2007 version) can’t be saved with the same name when memopal is running and their techs a clueless about a work-around. It also has been a FULL WEEK now that it’s backing up — a week?! (Fortunately, I also back up daily on two external hard drives.) I’m on cable, not dial-up, and we’re talking about maybe 32GB. It also seriously slows down the computer, using a bigger chunk of memory than even the graphics programs. Lately, it seems to just stop and requires that I then reinstall it. Good grief. I REGRET THE DAY I SIGNED UP. There must be better options!

  Your Excel problem would be very annoying! It sounds like their might be some kind of file lock going on, but that is just a random guess at this point. Has Memopal support given you any kind of new work-a-round?

I have memopal and found one problem with the service
a) Very slow to update my large pst file (2gig)
b) If you want to restore your entire backup (mine 190gig) good luck. I have been trying for three days and whilst the backup will pickup where the last upload did stopped, no such feature of the download. Instead if you massive restore download gets interrupted….. start again…. oh noooooo……

However, I think the restore feature on almost all these online backup services is the Achilles heal.

2) I can upload .pst files but I don’t have granular access to single emails. just the entire pst. Can you suggest any provider that offer a granular access?

3) Memopal is also similar to Google desktop, I can search files quickly. This probably a good thing to mention in this review.

  As for #2, I don’t know of any backup services that offer granular access to the outlook.pst file. The only company that could do that is probably Microsoft since it is a proprietary format and I can’t see them jumping into this area for while.
